  • I have a part time job now and need to drive the car. I want to pay for the petrol i use. Does anyone know a good way to work it out.

One day i drove to work, i filled up at petrol station near our house on the way there and filled up when i got back to see how much i used as an approximate amount (don't think the level the pump stops at is too consistent)
The main problem is when i drive around other places. I could take note of the kilometres i drove, but how much petrol i use will depend on what type of driving it is.
What do you think is the fairest way?

  • Altho "know-it-all" (that's cute) is right, you are just using the car and not renting it from a rental agency. This is family and the fact that they allow you use of the car reveals they are happy you are working and willing to share the expenses...they trust you and feel proudness for you...especially as you do want to share the expense....

So here is what you DON'T DO... Do not try to be so exact for what you "should pay". Instead, just get a fair "guestimate" of what you spend on petrol for the week you drive the most and add perhaps 10% to that and then ask your parents if they feel this would be enough to pay them each week. Explain also how you developed that amount... Should the car develope a major maintainance expense later then offer a fair share to cover that expense when it does happen...

They definitely are good parents and will tell you if they feel your amount is too much or too little, I assure you...

The important thing is that you pay the same amount weekly so that you can establish a weekly budget to live on...something you must do for the rest of your life...

You seem like a real cool guy with a good mind...some girl is going to grab you up someday and never have a regret for doing so...

Good luck and have a great holiday season...

  • The easiest way to is find the km/l the car gets on average. Let's suppose it gets 30km/l, and if one litre costs $1.20, you could then assume that driving 1 km should cost you $.04. However, there are other costs to the car as well, such as maintenance, and the cost of the car itself.

  • depends on the type of car, but something like £0.15 per mile in the UK is about what the fuel will cost.

  • The fairest thing to do would be to bring it back with a full tank anytime you use it.
